When kids get ready to go back to school, parents often think about school supplies, new clothes and class schedules. But there’s something else that’s just as important – back to school physicals. These check-ups help make sure children are healthy and ready to learn. One big part of these physicals is vision and hearing tests.

Sometimes, the first signs of a vision or hearing problem show up in the classroom or at home. Teachers and parents can help to make sure every child gets the support they need to succeed by talking to the parents.

Why Vision Tests Matter

Good vision is key to doing well in school. Kids need to see the board, read books and use computers. If a child has trouble seeing they might fall behind in class. Sometimes, kids don’t even know they have a problem. They might think everyone sees the same way they do.

A vision test can catch problems like:

  • Nearsightedness – can’t see far away
  • Farsightedness – can’t see up close
  • Astigmatism – blurry vision

When these problems are found early, glasses or other treatments can help right away. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends regular vision screenings starting in early childhood and continuing through the teen years. These screenings help catch problems early so they can be treated before they affect learning.

Why Hearing Tests are Important

Hearing is just as important as seeing. Kids need to hear their teachers, classmates and instructions. If a child can’t hear well, they might not understand lessons or may seem like they’re not paying attention. Scheduling a hearing test can help to prevent any miscommunications at home or at school.

Hearing tests can find problems like:

  • Hearing loss from birth
  • Ear infections
  • Trouble hearing sounds

The AAP also recommends hearing screenings at key ages, including before school entry and during adolescence. These tests help make sure kids don’t miss out on learning because of hearing problems.

What Parents Can Do

Parents should make sure their child gets a full physical before school starts. Ask the doctor to include vision and hearing tests. These tests are quick easy and painless – but they can make a big difference in a child’s school year.

Back-to-school time is exciting, but it’s also a good time to check in on your child’s health. Vision and hearing tests help make sure kids are ready to learn, grow and succeed. A healthy start means a strong school year!
