Don't skimp on care for your skin.

Skin is the largest organ on your body. With the sun's rays becoming increasingly intense during summer, it's crucial to understand the importance of skin health and the negative effects of excessive sun exposure.

The Importance of Skin.

Our skin is like a shield that keeps our internal organs safe. There are many harmful environmental factors that our skin protects us from like dirt, chemicals, and germs. It is also the first line of defense that stops infections and sickness. Our skin also helps us stay at the right temperature. When we get hot, it makes us sweat to cool us down, and when it's cold, it keeps our bodies warm. We have an abundance of nerves in our skin that helps us feel sensations. This includes things like touch, pressure, pain, and temperature. It makes it possible to interact with the world and feel what's around us. As our barrier to the outside world, our skin is exposed to the sun. If you get too much sun, it damages your skin. This makes it less robust to do its job. It is important to balance sun exposure with adequate skin protection to avoid the negative effects of its rays.

UV Rays.

The sun gives us plenty of benefits but it also has its dangers. Ultra violet rays are the most harmful effects of the sun. There are 2 type of UV Rays that you should be aware of when you are planning to be outside. UVA rays have a longer wavelength and penetrate deep into the skin, causing premature aging and skin damage. UVB rays have a shorter wavelength and primarily affect the outer layers of the skin. This contributes to sunburns and an increase risk of skin cancer. When UVA and UVB rays damage your skin cells, they can start to grow in an uncontrolled way. This is how skin cancer forms. Both types of UV rays can cause immediate damage to the skin. That’s why it's important to protect yourselves when you’re outside, especially during sunny days.

Prevention.

The most important step when taking care of your skin from the sun is prevention. Here are a few tips on what to do if you are facing the sun. Make sure you wear protective clothing. Wearing protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses physically block the UV rays from affecting your skin. Another great way to protect your skin is by wearing sunscreen. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to block harmful UV rays. Remember to reapply sunscreen every three hours, especially after swimming or sweating, for maximum effectiveness. You can also limit time spent in direct sunlight. During peak hours the sun's rays are most intense. This is usually between 10 am through 4 pm. Seek shade under trees, umbrellas, or using tents or canopies when outdoors. This comes in handy when doing fun summer activities. By taking these preventative actions, it lowers the chance of getting sunburned, premature aging, and skin cancer.

Skin Care after Sun Exposure.

Taking care of your skin is not only important before stepping out into the sun but also after. After being exposed to the sun’s rays, it is critical to replenish lost moisture by hydrating the skin. Drink plenty of water and apply moisturizers. If you are sunburned consider applying Aloe Vera gel. This helps soothe and restore the skin's moisture balance. Minimize further sun exposure until the skin has had time to heal. Wear protective clothing, use sunscreen, and seek shade. It is important to monitor any changes in the skin. This includes things like new or changing moles, freckles, or skin discoloration. If any concerning signs are noticed, consult your doctor for a professional evaluation.

The sun is unavoidable but its negative effects sure can be. Take the necessary actions to keep your skin healthy and prevent future skin illnesses. Start your daily skin care from the sun today. All it takes is a few steps for protection.
