Raising grandchildren can be a joyful and rewarding experience. Many grandparents step in to care for their grandkids when parents are unable to. Whether it’s for a short time or long-term, this role brings love, laughter and sometimes a few challenges.

One of the biggest challenges is staying healthy – physically, mentally and emotionally – while keeping up with the active young ones. If you’re a grandparent raising grandchildren, here are some helpful health tips to keep you strong and supported.

Eat Well and Stay Energized

Good nutrition is key to staying healthy. When you’re caring for children, you need energy and strength. Try to eat balanced meals that include:

  • Fruits and vegetables.
  • Whole grains like brown rice or whole wheat bread.
  • Lean proteins such as chicken, beans or fish.
  • Low-fat dairy milk or yogurt.

Avoid too much sugar, salt and processed foods. Drinking plenty of water also helps keep your body working well. If you’re cooking for kids, make meals that are healthy and tasty for both of you. Cooking together can even be a fun activity.

Keep Moving

Staying active helps your heart, muscles and mood. You don’t need to run a marathon – simple activities like walking, stretching or dancing with your grandkids count too. Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement most days. You can:

  • Take walks around the neighborhood or park.
  • Play games like tag or hide-and-seek.
  • Try gentle yoga or chair exercises.

Being active with your grandkids helps you bond and keeps everyone healthy.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is important for your body and brain. Adults need about 7-9 hours of sleep each night. If you’re not sleeping well, it can affect your mood, memory and energy. Try to:

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.
  • Avoid caffeine late in the day.
  • Keep your bedroom quiet and dark.

If stress or worries are keeping you up, talk to a doctor or counselor. Sleep matters!

Take Care of Your Mental Health

Raising children can be stressful, especially if you didn’t expect to be a caregiver again. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed sometimes. To support your mental health:

  • Talk to friends, family or support groups.
  • Take breaks when you can.
  • Practice deep breathing or meditation.
  • Ask for help when needed.

Many communities have programs for grandparents raising grandchildren. These can offer advice, support and even fun activities. Be sure to get involved with your community too.

Visit Clinicas

Don’t forget your own health checkups. It’s easy to focus on the kids, but your own health matters too. You don’t have to do it all alone. Clinicas del Camino Real, Incorporated offers Primary Care and Health Education to help you with checkups, food assistance, parenting classes or counseling.

Raising grandchildren is a big job, but you’re not alone. By taking care of your body and mind, you’ll be better able to care for your grandkids – and enjoy the special moments along the way. Your health matters and your love makes a lasting impact.
