The primary responsibilities of the Grant Writer include the preparation of proposals and grant applications and the performance of responsible professional and administrative work in researching, identifying, developing and responding to public and private grant opportunities in the areas of Business Development, Youth and Children, Civil Rights, Community Development, Construction, Disaster Relief, Enrollment, Facility Improvements, Health Education, Education-Teaching Health Centers, Employment/Jobs, Healthcare Services, Housing, Human Services, Medical/Research, Mental Health, Oral Health, Optometry, Outreach, Social Services, and Technology. The Grant Writer works independently under the general direction of the Chief Business Development Officer. The Grant Writer is responsible for performing the following duties:
- Researches and identifies new government, corporate, foundations and private funding prospects.
- Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grants for local, state, federal, foundation and corporate sources including budget development.
- Generates revenues for programs and services through timely submission of well-researched, well written and well-documented grants/fund-raising proposals.
- Track statistics, conduct periodic needs assessments and provide written materials necessary for the development of funding requests or grant applications.
- If required supervise other consultants hired for specific grant writing purposes.
- Maintains and implements funding calendar activities, including cultivation activities.
- Work with finance and other departments to gather information necessary to report to funders on current grant programs and comply with all grant reporting as required by funders.
- Maintain current records in database and in paper files, including grant tracking and reporting.
- Work with Management to provide development input for all written institutional materials (including Annual Report, newsletters, etc).
- Acts as liaison with program staff, funding agencies or organizations.
- Engages with program officers at organizations to solicit invitations to submit proposals.
- Makes appointments for Chief Business Development Officer and/or other Executive staff with foundation officers and other prospects, arrange for onsite tours for supporters.
- Identifies funding opportunities and new program areas to match strategic priorities, using research tools.
- Understanding of institutional history and programs.
- Assist with other fundraising projects as requested.
- Special projects as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned including participation in all safety programs which may include assignment to an emergency response team.
Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three years related experience in grant writing and grants/contract administration; Previous experience with non-profit fundraising (desirable); Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals; Excellent Budget Development Skills and Grants Management Skills; Strong editing skills; Attention to detail; Ability to meet deadlines; Able to monitor and meet income goals; Knowledge of grants and fundraising information sources; Knowledge of Federal Funding applications and requirements desired; Comprehensive knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment, and techniques; Ability to read and interpret documents; ability to speak effectively before groups of stakeholders, customers or employees; Ability to calculate figures and amounts; ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry; Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; Experience with and knowledge of computer operation; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.), and database applications; occasional overnight travel required.
