Most bruises heal on their own with no extra care required. But when bruises keep spreading, won’t stop hurting, or appear without an obvious cause, it’s a good idea to have them checked.
At Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc., our CAREPLUS Urgent Care health centers in Ventura County are equipped to assess bruising, swelling and minor injuries. You can walk in for an evaluation, ask questions and get a clear next step based on what we find.
Bruises may look simple, but they don’t always behave in predictable ways. A fall or bump can cause some bruises, but others develop overnight or continue changing over several days.
If a bruise feels unusual, painful or slow to improve, an Urgent Care visit can provide clarity.
Bruising happens when small blood vessels under the skin break because of impact or pressure. Common causes include:
● Sports injuries or falls
● Strains or sprains involving soft tissue
● Pressure from clothing, equipment or repeated friction
Some bruises fade quickly. Others become darker or more tender before improving.
Mount Sinai suggests seeking Urgent Care if you notice:
● A bruise that is unusually large or painful
● Firmness, swelling or warmth at the site — these could signal an infection
● Bruising that appears without a known injury
Unexplained or frequent bruising sometimes relates to medications or underlying medical conditions. Our team can help determine whether additional testing is necessary.
Not every bruise needs treatment, but early evaluation can prevent overlooked injuries and give you peace of mind.
Your Clinicas provider will examine the area, ask about recent activity and review any medications or health conditions. If the cause isn’t clear to us, we’ll help decide the next steps based on the symptoms you’re having.
Once evaluated, simple at-home care can help bruises heal more comfortably. The University of Rochester Health Encyclopedia recommends that you:
● Use a cold compress during the first 24–48 hours
● Elevate the affected area when possible
● Limit activities that increase discomfort
Avoid heat or massage until swelling improves. If the bruise changes rapidly or becomes more painful, return for reassessment.
When Imaging or Tests are Needed
A doctor may recommend imaging if the bruise is deep, follows a hard impact or you’re experiencing ongoing pain. We may also consider bloodwork if your bruising is frequent or hard to explain. These evaluations help us rule out bone injury or bleeding concerns.
Some bruises result from medications, vitamin deficiencies or blood-related conditions. If bruises appear often or without an apparent cause, we recommend a closer evaluation.
When Should I See a Doctor for a Bruise?
Seek care if a bruise spreads quickly, becomes very painful or doesn’t improve within several days. Feelings of warmth or other signs of infection should also be checked out.
How Long Do Bruises Take to Heal?
Most bruises fade within one to two weeks. Larger or deeper bruises may take longer, especially for older adults or individuals on blood-thinning medication.
Can Certain Medications Cause Bruising?
Yes, blood thinners, aspirin, steroids and some supplements can increase your bruising. Bring a current medication list to your appointment.
If a bruise is painful, concerning or simply not improving, CAREPLUS Urgent Care can assess the injury and help you understand what it means. Feel free to either walk in or call ahead to let us know you’re coming.
