Reducing Risks of Injury

Naturally, we all are fairly safe individuals that lead a day-to-day schedule with care. The simplest thing like tying your shoelace is enough to give us a sense of safety and security. Some of these practices may have been taught to us long ago as children, and we have decided to continue the ones that are burnt into our memories. But some of these safety measures tend to be forgotten along the way because we eliminate the risk involved because “it never happens to me.” Ready for the scary part? Injuries are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 40.

In the month of June, we’re looking to boost the importance of safety in your everyday lives, and remind you of the principles and practices you should incorporate to maintain safety. Additionally, we’d like to invite you to be interactive this month with Clinicas, and share your testimony of what role safety has played in your own lives.

Think of the instances where safety seemed like a nuisance to you. Buckling your seatbelt, putting the hurricane shutters up, wearing protective clothing when dealing with chemicals, etc. The list goes on. Safety can often feel like a mundane word or task, and a topic that seems like common sense. In reality, it has already prevented you from injury thousands of times, just without you realizing it. We tend to only realize the times when safety wasn’t present as a reason to do something in the future. For example, we’d most likely never text and drive again if we or someone we knew closely got into an auto accident for that reason. Doing other activities while driving – like texting or eating – distracts you and increases your chance of crashing. Almost 1 in 6 crashes (15%) where someone is injured involves distracted driving. Safety doesn’t need to be a reaction, though.

We shouldn’t hesitate to acknowledge a lack of safety in our surroundings, either. Many times, we feel a societal pressure to just let things be swept under the rug when it comes to operating safely. Whether it’s at work or in your personal life, you should be a shining example of safety instead of taking risks to impress those around you. It will never be worth the injury to you or those around you.

Clinicas is devoted to safety in all aspects, and we hope you’ll join us in being vocal about its importance in society. Stay tuned this month to our social channels as we share more interesting and helpful tips about creating a safe environment for you and others.
