Glaucoma Testing

Glaucoma Screening and Testing at Clinicas in Ventura County

Glaucoma is one of the most important conditions a routine eye exam can uncover, in part because it does its damage quietly and gives you little warning. Screening for glaucoma is part of the regular care that Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc. offers here in Ventura County.

Glaucoma Testing at Clinicas

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in the United States, and Hispanic adults face a disproportionately higher risk than other groups. Routine screening is the only reliable way to catch it early, and at Clinicas, it’s a standard part of our Vision Care practice.

Our optometry teams offer glaucoma testing at select Health Centers across Ventura County. If cost has prevented you from having an eye exam, our sliding fee scale determines your payment based on your household income.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, most often from elevated pressure inside the eye. The National Eye Institute describes it as a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.

It’s often called “the silent thief of sight” for good reason. Most forms cause no pain and no symptoms early on, so by the time your vision fades, significant nerve damage has often already occurred.

How Glaucoma is Detected

Your Clinicas optometrist will combine a few tests to build a full picture of your eye health.

Eye pressure test (tonometry)

Tonometry measures the pressure inside your eye. A high eye pressure reading is a key sign of glaucoma risk.

Optic nerve evaluation

Your optometrist examines the optic nerve directly for structural changes that can signal early glaucoma, often using dilating drops that widen your pupils for a clearer view.

Visual field testing

This test maps your peripheral vision to check for blind spots that may point to nerve damage. It’s non-invasive and helps your optometrist track changes between visits.

Who Should be Tested for Glaucoma?

Some people carry a higher risk than others and benefit from regular screening. You should consider routine glaucoma testing if any of the following apply to you:

● You’re over 60, when risk climbs noticeably with age

● You have a family history of glaucoma

● You’re of Hispanic heritage, since glaucoma often appears earlier and more often in this demographic

● You’re living with diabetes or high blood pressure

We should really stress that last point. The optic nerve’s blood flow is something we watch carefully at Clinicas because of the possible effects of diabetes and high blood pressure.

Consider asking about diabetic retinopathy screening during your next Primary Care appointment if diabetes affects your health.

Why Early Detection Matters

Damage from glaucoma is permanent. If glaucoma damages the optic nerve, it causes permanent vision loss, although the right treatment can prevent further deterioration.

Early diagnosis of glaucoma allows most patients to preserve the rest of their eyesight. This is the true purpose of routine screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is glaucoma testing painful?

The tests are gentle and non-invasive. Tonometry involves a brief puff of air or light contact with the surface of the eye, and most people find the screening comfortable.

How often should I be tested for glaucoma?

Anyone 60 or older should get screened every one to two years. Your optometrist might recommend more frequent visits if you have risk factors like a family history of glaucoma, diabetes or if you are of Hispanic descent.

Are Hispanic adults at higher risk for glaucoma?

The Glaucoma Research Foundation affirms that glaucoma disproportionately impacts Hispanic adults. It appears earlier in life and with greater frequency compared to other populations. If this applies to you, making regular screenings a top priority is essential.

Can glaucoma be treated if caught early?

Yes, the damage can’t be reversed, but early treatment can slow or stop it from progressing. The sooner it’s identified, the more options your eye doctor has to work with.
