Vaccines help protect us from serious diseases. They are like shields that keep our body safe. Getting the right vaccines at the right time is important for staying healthy. Let’s take a look at the key vaccines people need at different stages of life.

Babies and Toddlers (0-2 Years Old)

Babies are born with a weak immune system. That’s why they need several vaccines early in life. These vaccines help protect them from dangerous diseases. It is up to their parents to keep track of which vaccines they receive and at what age. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that parents keep a vaccine record to bring to every doctor visit.

Important vaccines for this age:

  • Hepatitis B – protects the liver
  • DTaP – protects against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough
  • Polio – prevents a disease that can cause paralysis
  • Hib – protects against a serious bran infection
  • PCV – protects against pneumonia
  • Rotavirus – protects against severe diarrhea
  • MMR – protects against measles, mumps and rubella
  • Varicella – protects against chickenpox

Children (4-6 Years Old)

Before starting school, kids need booster shots. These can help keep their protection strong. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that high vaccine coverage in children helps prevent outbreaks in schools and communities.

Important vaccines for this age:

  • DTaP booster
  • Polio booster
  • MMR booster
  • Varicella booster

Preteen and Teens (11-18 Years Old)

As kids grow, their bodies change. New vaccines can help protect them during this time. It is recommended that children receive these vaccines before given major exposure to viruses.

Important vaccines for this age:

  • Tdap – a booster for tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough
  • HPV – protects against cancers caused by the human papillomavirus
  • Meningococcal – protects against a serious brain infection

Adults (19 – 64 Years Old)

Adults also need vaccines to stay healthy. Some are boosters and some are new. The CDC advises that adults should check with their doctor to see if they missed any childhood vaccines.

Important vaccines at this age:

  • Tdap or Td – every 10 years
  • Flu shot – every year
  • COVID-19 – every year or as recommended
  • HPV – if not given earlier
  • MMR or Varicella – if not received as a child

Older Adults (65+ Years Old)

As adults age, the immune systems get weaker. Vaccines help protect older adults from serious illnesses. The WHO states that vaccinating older adults helps reduce hospital visits and protect those with chronic illnesses.

Important vaccines at this age:

  • Flu shot – every year
  • COVID-19 – every year or as recommended
  • Shingles – protects against painful rashes
  • Pneumococcal – protects against pneumonia
